Local know-how

Electricians in Slough: what to check and how to get an accurate quote

Practical local guidance across the SL postcodes, from Slough to Windsor and Maidenhead — accreditations worth checking, Slough Borough Council and landlord rules, and the details that let a local firm price the job first time.

Do landlords in Slough need an EICR certificate?

Yes. Every rented home in England needs a satisfactory Electrical Installation Condition Report at least every five years, and at the start of a new tenancy. You must give the tenant a copy within 28 days and hand it to Slough Borough Council within seven days if they ask. Licensed HMOs are inspected more closely, so keep the remedial work invoices with the report.

What is the difference between Part P, NICEIC and NAPIT?

Part P is the building regulation covering domestic electrical work. NICEIC, NAPIT and ELECSA are the schemes that let a registered electrician self-certify that work and issue the certificate. Ask which scheme your electrician belongs to and for their registration number — if nobody can self-certify, the work has to be signed off by the council's building control instead, which costs more and takes longer.

What details speed up an electrical quote?

Send a photo of the consumer unit with the cover on (the ratings and whether you have RCDs are visible), the number of rooms and sockets involved, and say whether the property is solid-brick or has plasterboard walls — chasing cables into 1930s Cippenham brickwork takes far longer than dry-lined walls. Mention any fuse board tripping or scorch marks straight away.

Does my electrician need insurance as well as registration?

Registration proves competence; insurance covers damage. Ask for public liability cover of at least £2m and check the policy is in the trading name you are paying. Any firm on slough.net carrying a Verified badge has had both its scheme registration and its insurance document checked by us.
